This was a family trip from Monterey to Mexico (Cabo San Lucas and the Sea of Cortez in the winter of 1997)
We took our time going down the coast and letting some newbies on board get their sea legs. We stopped in to see Brad and Laurie Johnson in Ventura which was very fun to see their home and have a dinner party with them. The weather I recall was nice most of the way. Nikki and Zach were both young and did very well for their first big trip. Gina was a bit sea sick but got much better as the trip went along. Things I remember were being boarded by the Mexican Federales just after pumping our bilges and having a cocktail. They boarded with machine guns and tapped on the interior walls looking for drugs I think. It was scary and comical at the same time. The Federales were all so young! The next day Nikki got stung by a jellyfish but was OK thankfully since we were anchored at an island off the Mexico Coast. We fished along the way and had many great meals and music (A lot of Jimmy Buffett)
We were in Cabo San Lucas for Christmas and had time to shop in town for funny gifts for everyone. We met other boaters and Roslyn flew down to join us but got sick the first day she was there. She recovered to join in the festivities. We journeyed up into the Sea of Cortez and found many isolated bays to anchor and enjoy. We ended up in La Paz and hauled Scaldis out of the water until we could return. I loved the Sea of Cortez but Cabo San Lucas was too much of a tourist trap for me.
